MASTERS PROGRAM 2008: FOURTH TEXT

"As a basis for tantric practice we need to first develop the qualities
of sutra, the lam-rim (Stages of the Path), by studying and meditating
on the paths of beings of small scope, middle scope, and great scope.
In this way we train our mind to become a suitable vessel
for the practice of tantra

Summary of the Text

A condensed explanation of the subjects covered in Lama Tsongkhapa’s Great Exposition of the Stages of the Path of Mantra. This text presents the most important features of the four classes of tantra as well as the initiation procedures and particularities of the deity yoga related to each class.

To study the Grounds and Paths of Tantra, it is necessary to have received a highest yoga tantra (mahanuttarayogatantra) initiation. Highest yoga tantra initiations, such as that of Yamantaka, Chakrasamvara, Kalachakra, Guhyasamaja, Gyelwa Gyatso, or Hevajra, must be received from a qualified lama and entail the taking of the bodhisattva and tantra vows along with the commitment to do the Six Session Guru Yoga practice on a daily basis.
