The gompa
(meditation hall), measuring 115 square meters,
is the main space in which teachings, courses,
pujas, and initiations are held. Located in
the heart of the Institute, the gompa has
ample natural lighting from the many windows
on two sides and in the ceiling, with scenic
views of the courtyard below and the surrounding
countryside. The architectural style is typical
of Tuscany, with vintage terra cotta tiles
and large wooden beams supporting the roof.
The main altar contains statues of Lama Tsongkhapa
and his two disciples, Shakyamuni Buddha,
and Lama Yeshe as well as numerous other figures
of buddhas and lamas. The altar is flanked
on both sides by bookcases containing Tibetan
texts of the entire Kangyur (the teachings
of the Buddha) and Tengyur (commentaries on
the Buddha’s doctrine). A series of
thangkas (traditional Tibetan iconographical
paintings) suspended from beams depicts the
main events in the life of Lama Tsongkhapa.
The gompa’s walls are adorned with many
thangkas and statues, including a beautifully
painted statue of 1000-Armed Chenrezig and
a statue of Buddha Maitreya.
